CARES Act

Federal Stimulus Check Information

What is the CARES Act?

On Friday, March 27, the federal government signed into law the CARES Act, a $2.2 trillion federal spending bill aimed at providing relief to U.S. consumers and businesses impacted by COVID-19. The CARES Act is, in fact, the third piece of coronavirus legislation signed into law in the last month. More information is being made available in regards to receiving payments. In addition, the legislation also expands the maximum allowable unemployment benefit by $600 per week for up to four months. Benefits will be offered to all consumers that find themselves out of work because of COVID-19, including the self-employed, gig economy workers, and furloughed workers. Many lenders, like PremierOne Credit Union, are offering financial relief options to those individuals and families who need it most.

Who gets the check?

  • If you file as an individual – Eligible tax filers with adjusted gross incomes of up to $75,000 will get the full $1,200 payment. The payment is reduced by $5 for every $100 over the $75,000 threshold. If your gross income exceeds $99,000 as an individual with no children, you will not receive a check.
  • If you file jointly with your spouse – Eligible joint tax filers with adjusted gross incomes up to $150,000 will receive the full $2,400 payment. The payment is reduced by $5 for each $100 about that threshold. If your joint gross incomes exceed $198,000 and you have no children, you will not receive a return.
  • If you have children – Eligible taxpayers will receive up to $500 per qualifying child.
  • If you receive social security – No additional action is needed. The government will either send you a direct deposit or a paper check.

How do I get the check?

  • If you’re eligible, the IRS will either send you a deposit via direct deposit or a paper check. Direct deposit will go out to individuals who have their account information on file from filing their 2018 or 2019 taxes.

When will I get my payment?

  • Direct deposit payments will start going out as early as the week of April 12. The IRS will then mail paper checks starting on May 4. They have stated that this could take as long as 20 weeks, although the IRS has expressed that it is trying to make those deposits more quickly.

Receiving a Direct Deposit:

What is a Direct Deposit?

  • Direct deposit is an easy way to have money deposited directly into your checking or savings account without waiting for a check to arrive in the mail. Simply provide the IRS your account and routing number by filing a tax return or using the web-based portal. The money will move directly into your account once it is sent.

Need help finding your account or routing number?

  • You can typically find your account and routing number on the bottom left-hand corner of a personal check. The routing number is the first set of numbers and is typically nine digits.
  • The next set of numbers — just to the right of the routing number — is your account number.
  • If you don’t have a check handy, you may be able to find the account and routing number on your statements or online banking.
  • Our Routing Number: 321176875

What if I need to update the account information I provided when I filed taxes?

  • Please visit irs.gov/coronavirus for guidance on how to set up or change your direct deposit information.

How do I know the payment arrived?

  • You will get a paper notice in the mail from the IRS no later than a few weeks after your payment has been sent. The notice will contain information about where the payment was sent (either the mailing address for a paper check or the bank account number for a direct deposit) and in what form it was made. If you cannot locate the payment and have not received a paper notice, then check the web-based portal for the stats of your payment as it may still be processing.
  • You can also check to see if the money has arrived by signing into online or mobile banking and checking your transaction history.

Please be careful…AVOID SCAMS

  • Scammers are using these government services as ways to gain access to your personal information. This includes phishing emails, phone calls, and copycat websites. Make sure you continue to keep your personal information secure and stay vigilant of any suspicious activity during this tense time.
  • The IRS has stated that it is only sending out the money out via direct deposit or check using information from your 2018 or 2019 taxes or social security information. DO NOT give out your sensitive information over the phone. At no point has the IRS said they will call to collect information.
  • The IRS will not ask you to pay to expedite the process or pay an upfront fee. A popular scam is to ask for a fee upfront to receive your deposit early.
  • If someone calls to ask something questionable related to the stimulus payments, contact the IRS for clarification. Visit www.irs.gov for more information.
  • The IRS is publishing the latest information on its website. Visit www.irs.gov and look in the news section for additional details or clarifications.
